Notes for Stockport Discussion Circle 28th April 2010

The May 2010 Election

1. Are we now being asked to choose on the basis of personality, rather than policy, or political philosophy?

2. The influence of the media - the leaders' wives, even what nationality they are or what they are wearing.

3. We seem to be heading for a "hung parliament" - what are the implications?

4. Would proportional representation be a more democratic way to decide?

5. Are there now a percentage of the population who feel so alienated by the system (sometimes called the "underclass") that they no longer bother to vote, and what needs to be done to help them to feel part of society?

6. Devolution is now a reality. How do we think it will affect this election?

7. Immigration is always an issue. What about emigration?

8. Is the expenses scandal behind us now?

9. Is it fair to blame the labour government for the effect of the recession on the UK?

10. Is this the first election that the internet has had some effect?
